BBW: Bama vs. UK

I shot my first women's basketball game at Coleman Coliseum since college and it was also my last ever. Next week the team will start playing at a newly renovated Fosters Auditorium. I think the space will be a better fit for the program considering the 15,000+ capacity coliseum was embarassingly empty for their game against Kentucky today. It was a shocking contrast to the packed out men's game against Kentucky a week or so ago. The media coverage was just as meager. I was literally the only photographer to show up more than 5 minutes before tip-off and almost the only person working on press row post-game. At the men's game the floor was crawling with videographers, photographers, and reporters well over an hour before the game and press row was so packed I was almost forced into the photo workroom that has spotty wireless.
It is nothing new that women's sports get far less attention or fan support than their male counterparts. However, it never ceases to bother me. No sport makes this fact more apparent than basketball. The place, the uniforms, the rules, they are all the same. Sure the women are a little slower paced and very rarely have the height for dazzling dunks, but they play scrappier not to mention tend to appreciate their few fans all the more.
I swear I'm not trying to bash bama fans into getting it in gear and supporting their ladies with the same fervor. Really it just makes me sad to see female athletes who work just as hard not get the same love from their communities.

BBM: Bama vs. UK

When the Kentucky Wildcats come to down it is a different ball game. Down here in Alabama football is king, but to the Wildcats it is all about the hoops. And they are good. They aren't as good this year as last year, but it is always a big deal to upset them. Alabama did that last night in a thriller that came down to the final 2.5 seconds. Alabama held the lead most of the game and midway through the second half were up by as much as 17 points. Then the Wildcats started a run that brought them within a single point. Bama's Ben Elden stole the ball and was fouled with just a few ticks on the clock. His sunk shots left the score 68-66 where it would stay before time ran out and the Crimson Tide bench rushed the court in celebration. It was a good one. As an avid football fan I had almost forgotten how thrilling basketball can be.

BBM: Bama vs. USC

When I quit my staff job last February and moved back to my hometown I remember shooting my last Georgia basketball game and thinking it was possible I might never find my way back to the hardwoods to shoot another game. Last night that fear was dismissed as I began covering Alabama Basketball for US PRESSWIRE.
I felt like a rookie as I got accustomed to the coliseum I haven't shot in since my college days 6 years ago. I had an early crisis when I spent 40 minutes trying to get the wireless working in the media workroom, but luckily after advice from the SID I set up on the floor where there is much better reception. Once I could breath I took in the experience. I had fun chatting with some of the other photographers which made me feel like I was back in a photo community. I also felt the familiar prickle of stress as I rushed to get my images in as fast as possible during halftime and post-game. The 8pm start times this season are going to make it pretty rough and I've got to figure out some shortcuts to make the editing process faster. I'm look forward to the challenge and am just excited to be back in the game.

Ruby Sessions

Every couple of months since her birth I've had a photo session with my niece Ruby. In our first session when she was only 2 weeks old me, my mother, and sister all worked relentlessly just to position her as she slept like a lump. We worked over an hour trying to get her to wake up long enough to take a couple quick shots of her eyes open.

In the next session at 2 months positioning her was a little easier as she could now hold her head up. This time we worked tirelessly to try to capture one of her elusive smiles. We failed, but met the other goal of showcasing her newly vibrant blue eyes.

Then at 5 months it was the Fall and time for an outdoor shoot. She had learned to sit up for more than a few seconds literally the day before so we took advantage. She also was much more generous with her smiles.

At 6.5 months she was a full-fledged ham. It was a breeze taking her Christmas portraits as she was all smiles and incredibly responsive to the high pitched squeals from her Granny.

Obviously Ruby is on track to be the most photographed child in history. Hopefully by the time she gets to that very easily distracted age we will have her so trained she will be like a seasoned pro ready for her next fashion spread.
