UGA vs. LSU: 46 seconds

The #18 Georgia Bulldogs and #4 LSU Tigers fought like cats and dogs for a W in about the last minute of play Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Georgia standout wide receiver A.J. Green leaped above a Tiger defender to score the go-ahead touchdown with about 1:09 left on the clock. The fans and players went wild with celebration, so much so that the refs penalized Green for excessive celebration. I didn't see anything that really crossed the line, but refs see what ever it is that refs see. The score was 13-12. It only took a couple plays for LSU to snatch the victory out of the paws of the Bulldogs. The kickoff return with the 15-yard boost from the penalty took the Tigers into Georgia territory. There were only 46 seconds left to play when LSU stud running back Charles Scott burst through tackles to score a 33-yard touchdown to win the game, 20-13.

PREPS: Black on Brock

Ha it is funny that I talked about dark lighting at high school football last week because I shot at the darkest field I've ever seen Friday night. The Athens Academy Spartans came to Commerce to face the Tigers. I became aquainted with some Tiger fans when my car battery died in the parking lot before the game. Then I took the field where the Tigers were donned in all black uniforms. That paired with very little lighting equaled a very high ISO, poor color, and the ultimate photo enemy- NOISE (graininess). I did the best I could to avoid noise by shooting at 1/250 and 1/320 of a second, but this adds in much more motion blur. To avoid most motion blur you need at least 1/500, but that just wasn't possible tonight.
All that aside tonight was the Deon Brock show. Brock is the standout star of the Commerce team scoring 2 touchdowns and snagging an interception all in the first half that I was there. He also scored the Tigers other two touchdowns in the second half taking his team to a 28-7 victory.

GAMEDAY: Rise to Power

Oh Gameday how you torture me.
After Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green's mind-blowingly awesome game last week against Arizona State (8 catches for 153 yards and a blocked field goal) he was chosen as our Gameday cover story. I shot A.J. once last year, but paired with former wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi (now with the Cleveland Browns). This is the first time I'd get the college superstar all on his lonesome. I've had an idea for the 3 football seasons I've been covering Georgia that I haven't had the chance to use. This was the chance. A.J. Green is like a superhero on the field so I wanted to have him pose in a Superman stance with a Georgia "G" flag billowing off his shoulders like a cape. We typically get our ideas approved by the folks at UGA beforehand. Late the night before the shoot I got the word that the Superman idea was a no-go. I was absolutely exasperated. I'd spent so much time conceptualizing my plan and just had no creativity left in me to conjure another good idea.
I spent hours that I should have been sleeping rolling it around in my brain. I thought of words that describe A.J. and one came to mind that stuck: ELECTRIC. From there I came up with an idea for an illustration centered around electricity bolting from his hands to a football. After shooting A.J. and spending 4 hours in front of a computer screen I had a cover. It's no Superman, but it works.


Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green has 81 career catches for 1,391 yards and 12 touchdowns. At this pace, he will be the Bulldogs’ all-time top receiver after his junior season.
